Overshadowed by Motown biggies who ruled the '60s airwaves, these girl groups represent the many vital pockets of black female harmonizers found across the U.S., especially in the east. And going even further afield into fringe terrain, the people at Warner's have chosen a potent mix of obscure sides and minor hits by such golden contingents as
the Chiffons,
the Three Degrees,
the Apollas, and the Cookies. No "He's So Fine" here (a huge smash for
the Chiffons) -- 60's Girl Groups packs it in with such angelically disguised R&B highlights as the Royalettes' "There He Goes" and the Blossoms' "Good, Good Lovin'." A fine sampler for all those astute girl group fans. ~ Stephen Cook
