A Touch of Elegance draws its material from five of pianist
André Previn's Columbia albums of the 1961-1962 period. Three of the five albums (13 of the 18 selections on this sampler) feature
Previn's piano backed by string orchestras on well-played easy listening music that rarely wanders from the melody. Two other songs are taken from a quartet set with trombonist
J.J. Johnson, while three pieces feature guitarist
Herb Ellis. The latter are more adventurous, but overall the music on this CD is overly safe; tasteful but predictable. ~ Scott Yanow
