On their third full-length, Burnt Palms toughen up the fuzz, fatten the bass, and crank the drums. They still deal in candied indie pop, but in place of the cool detachment marking prior efforts, the trials and tribulations of romance zap these tunes full of nervy energy. On the punky “Fold,” singer Christina Riley drowns in soured love and insomnia, while on the angsty “Over” she desperately hopes that cutting her hair can help her move on. But as the buzzing closer “You” reveals, Riley is perpetually caught between her clashing desires and insecurities.
