Jane Winther's BARDO is a hypnotic aural journey that will take listeners through the outer reaches of inner space. Weaving together acoustic and organic sounds (singing bowls, flute, jaw harp, saxophone, bells, didgeridoo, and voices), Winther makes a sonic tapestry that is spare, haunting, atmospheric, and, at times, chilly and forbidding. Deeply resonant bass tones reverberate on the underside of Winther's compositions, creating a highly meditative, almost religious, ambience, while voices and various other instruments sparkle in the high end. It is difficult at times to identify the sources of the sounds (the jaw harp on "Jaw harp and Voices," for example, is recorded at extremely close range), but this only adds to the otherworldly, transporting aspect of this quite beautiful music.
