"Rush Hour," the first single from Joy Rider's debut LP, 3/4 Special, is a fine forgotten gem of the Brit-pop movement; the saccharine choruses and memorable hooks establish it as an excellent single. 3/4 Special as a whole, however, never comes close to the peak of that song. Joy Rider seem to have a bit of an identity crisis -- they want to be both Ash and
Green Day at the same time and fail to be as memorable as either. While a few tracks -- like the dreary "That Tired" and the follow-up single "All Gone Away" -- are pleasant-sounding filler, most of the album suffers from dry, lifeless production and forgettable tunes. 3/4 Special is a disappointing debut considering the highs that Joy Rider achieved on "Rush Hour."
