Vol. 5 of
Magnifica Comunità's tour of Boccherini's extensive output for string quintet (the two-cello variety occupied more of his chamber music output than any other genre) focuses on the six quintets of Op. 20. This set, published in 1775, still finds the first cello part in the higher range of the instrument, but less frequently in the overtly soloistic role than the Op. 18 quintets. The
Magnifica Comunità ensemble continues in its welcome tradition of combining academic understanding of Boccherini's music and historical circumstances with pleasing musical decisions. Its intonation remains pristine, and the articulation between instruments is tight and sparkling. Vibrato is used with appealing scarcity and the musicians achieve a balance that easily allows the melodic line to rise above the harmony without understating the importance of accomanimental figures. Brilliant Classic's sound quality for this particular installment is a bit on the weak side; listeners will have to crank the volume to be able to hear all of details in the intricate playing going on. Apart from that, this album is another welcome addition to the collection of the complete Boccherini quintets.
