Bon Ivers debuutalbum For Emma Forever Ago was aan de ene kant zo mooi door het intieme, verlaten gevoel dat je erbij kreeg. En aan de andere kant was het Justin Vernons pijnlijk ijle stem, met een zo minimaal mogelijke muzikale begeleiding om niet af te leiden van de impact. Na een aantal jaar, waarin zijn leven op zijn kop is gezet door het succes van For Emma..., klinkt zijn tweede plaat heel anders. Terwijl For Emma... uitgekleed en intiem was, is Bon Iver volgepropt met gastmuzikanten, blazersecties, strijkers en extra zangers. Binnen deze uitgebreidere arrangementen is er nog steeds af en toe ruimte voor tedere schoonheid. Bijvoorbeeld in het relatief ingehouden "Wash." waarin Vernons gekwelde stemgeluid wordt afgezet tegen een puntig herhalend pianoriedeltje (en verder alleen minimale strijkers en pedalsteel), twee derde van het nummer "Holocene" en het simpele en aangrijpende "Michicant."
