Arguably the strongest in a long line of singles aimed at breaking
Throwing Muses to a larger audience, "Bright Yellow Gun" is a hypnotic, guitar-driven track that succinctly encapsulates the energy and aquatic overtones of the landmark
University LP, from which it was culled.
The 'Muses, like
Suede and
the Smiths, were never the band to stock their promotional releases with schlocky filler or unimaginative remixes. Steeped in that tradition, the
Bright Yellow Gun single contains two of singer/guitarist
Kristin Hersh's standout, otherwise unreleased originals, including the gorgeous, slow-burning "Like a Dog" and the fan favorite "Red Eyes."
Throwing Muses were also adeptly economical and savvy when choosing their cover songs, as is exemplified here by a successfully woozy rendition of
the Latin Playboys' "Crayon Sun" that only
Hersh could have conjured.
