The small French-Canadian label DSM has a habit of recording some very well-executed mainstream jazz by local artists. On this release, flautist
François Richard is backed by an outstanding rhythm section of pianist Jean Beaudet, bassist
Frédéric Alarie, and drummer Pierre Tanguay. While not innovative, the light, swinging music by the quartet is immaculately performed. All seven pieces were written by the leader, and generally feature slightly drab, sometimes lilting melodies. The agile and talented flautist impresses with his command of the idiom, although some might prefer a somewhat more adventurous program. While the slow pieces drag slightly, the catchy closer, "Entre les Mots," is uplifting and even rousing. Beaudet and
Alarie are given ample opportunity to solo, which they do with consummate precision. ~ Steve Loewy
