Trumpeter/arranger
Bosse Broberg and his Swedish orchestra (which is called Nogenja) perform six standards and three of the leader's originals on this stimulating program. The arrangements are sometimes a bit unusual. For example, "Donna Lee" is given an echo effect with some of the parts being played one bar ahead of the others, particularly during the melody statements. Other tunes that have been at least slightly reinvented include "Warm Valley," "Django,"
Ray Bryant's "Cubano Chant," and "Blood Count." Among the key soloists are trumpeter
Jan Allan, tenors
Lennart Aberg and Dave Wilczewski, baritonist
John Hogman, and altoist
Krister Andersson;
Broberg just solos on "Hej Bej." This CD is well worth checking out by fans of modern big bands. ~ Scott Yanow
