Recorded in 1991 in the first flush of victory for both the digital recording method and the historically informed performance practice movement, this disc of Christmas concertos by
Il Giardino Armonico is as good as it gets for what it is. The sound is crisp, deep, and colorful with a wonderful sense of time and place. The selection is wonderful: not only are the time-honored Christmas concertos of Corelli,
Vivaldi, Torelli, and Manfredini included, but also such rarities as Pietro Antonacci's three-movement Sinfonia Pastorale and Johann Christoph Pez's seven-movement Concerto Pastorale. And in each case, the performances are fabulous with bright colors, brilliant playing, and soulful interpretations. Anyone looking for a collection of Baroque instrumental music centered on the theme of Christmas could not do better than this superb disc. And anyone who enjoys it will be pleased to know that there are many more discs out there by
Il Giardino Armonico.
