A collaborative album recorded around the globe, Don't Sleep is the follow-up to Australian songwriter/producer Alice Ivy's vibrant full-length debut (2018's I'm Dreaming). While at least as diverse in terms of its guests and style patchwork, Don't Sleep takes a more focused approach to song structure, sometimes emphasizing heart over flair within its sample-heavy, hip-hop-injected club tracks. Alice Ivy's Annika Schmarsel wrote the album mostly while on tour in support of her debut, taking a mobile studio along with her to places as far-flung as Toronto, Los Angeles, London, and Sydney. Don't Sleep opens with the only solo track of the set, the brief "Champagne Late Nights," whose distorted, childlike opening vocals, whirring synths, and deep slow groove set the stage for continued high-contrast productions. Guided by the anxious patter of rapper Cadence Weapon, the effervescent funk of "Sunrise" then moves the album onto the dancefloor, and it mostly stays there. Offering variation without laying off the bass are several down-tempo entries, like "In My Mind" featuring singer/rapper Ecca Vandal and the dreamy, pulsing "Sweetest Love," with alt-pop artist Montaigne and indie rocker Bertie Blackman. On the other end of the spectrum, more-rousing options include "All Hit Radio" (with Teef and Tessa) and the Swish-led "My Turn," though midtempo track "All In for You" featuring soul singer Ngaiire is a borderline earworm, if less buoyant. A touch uneven and mercurial but engaging and often infectious, Don't Sleep is another worthwhile set from an ambitious artist still finding her stride.
