A long-standing figurehead of the hardcore dirty south sound, 2 Chainz has once again managed to adopt elements of modern trap while simultaneously keeping his sound from the 2000s alive and kicking. He lives in the middle ground between the Three 6 Mafia and those who’ve followed in Young Thug’s footsteps. He’s a rapper who truly knows how to forge his own personal sound in today’s busy musical landscape. Dope Don’t Sell Itself is as synthetic as it gets, and the TR-808 drums sound incredible, expertly handled by renowned beatmakers such as Moneybagg, Buddah Bless or Mannie Fresh. With a good sense of humour, 2 Chainz provides optimistic tracks, like the excellent 10 Bracelets featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again, as well as more ominous offerings like Neighbors Know My Name. This fifth solo album gradually builds to include some great melodies and light-hearted moments, giving us a little glimpse of 2 Chainz’s personality: crazy, daring and comfortable with stepping out of his comfort zone. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
