On his fourth set, Fallen Embers, Bay Area electronic producer and DJ Illenium continues his evolution past the dubstep-influenced sounds of his early releases, softening his delivery with radio-friendly cuts and a slew of guest vocalists. Like similar mainstream-leaning output by the likes of SeeB and Sigala, Fallen Embers sticks close to that feel-good formula with uplifting anthems focused on the highs and lows of love. Fans of his more aggressive tracks and explosive stage performances can jump straight to "Paper Thin" with Angels & Airwaves and the standout "Sideways" with Valerie Broussard and Nurko for the most muscular moments on the album, but even still, these cuts remain emotive and midtempo. The lack of big builds and huge drops aside, the LP is emotionally engaging, often soothing, and -- if this was a live set -- ideal for resting and catching one's breath.
