The title of
Ray Wilson's new album,
Genesis vs. Stiltskin, is somewhat misleading, as there is no death match between the Scottish rock singer's two most high-profile bands involved. The four-disc package essentially combines a new album of
Wilson's group Stiltskin (credited as Ray Wilson & Stiltskin, even though as with the 2006 "reunion" album
She, no original members from Stiltskin are involved) with a two-CD/one-DVD live recording of his Genesis Classics project (which, of course, does not involve any members of
Genesis either). The main album, Stiltskin's Unfulfillment, offers 12 tracks of earthy rock, written by
Wilson, guitarist Uwe Metzler, and producer Peter Hoff. The live album (which had previously been available through
Wilson's website) was recorded in Poznan, Poland, and sees a group of 12 musicians (including members of the new Stiltskin plus a string section) perform not only well-known
Genesis songs such as "Land of Confusion" and "I Can't Dance," but also a number of solo songs from previous
Genesis members, including
Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise,"
Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill," and
Mike + the Mechanics' "Another Cup of Coffee." ~ Christian Genzel
