the Maggots play 1960s-style retro garage punk without much of a twist, although they do a decent job of it. While the fuzzy guitars and vocal snarls of their songs have obvious antecedents in American garage-psych bands like
the Chocolate Watch Band, there is a little punk grunge in the guitar distortion, and a swampy-trashy, ominous feel to much of the material that wouldn't be alien to
Cramps fans. Lead singer and guitarist Mans P. Mansson has a high, raspy delivery that isn't so hot and gets on the nerves from time to time. They're best when they slow things down a bit and accentuate throbbing guitar reverb and ominous chord progressions, as on "Now You Say We're Through," which has a chorus that's pretty similar to the one in
the Rolling Stones' "Play With Fire." ~ Richie Unterberger
