The title for
Shampoo's ignored second album,
Girl Power, became the rallying cry for
the Spice Girls months after the record was released. In fact, by the time "Wannabe" jumped to number one, few remembered
Shampoo, and that's because
Girl Power simply failed to deliver any of the trashy thrills of their debut. Jacqui and Carrie's tuneless chanting and whining were fun on "Trouble" because they had a knowing sense of humor and some killer hooks. Here, their attitude isn't tempered by humor or hooks, and the album simply becomes overbearing and tiresome, lacking even the campiness that was so gleefully paraded on
We Are Shampoo. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
