Andreas Bolz -- the man who is
BolzBolz -- is often surrounded by the word "electro," usually along with words like "weird," "experimental," and "neo." It helps describe
BolzBolz's music to an extent, at least the hypnotic, robotic, warm analog side of it.
Human Race sounds as much like a techno record as an electro one, but techno with its early spirit (Yellow Magic Orchestra and
Cosmic Baby come to mind). While most with this influence have focused on the ambient side of techno,
BolzBolz goes for the rolling beat along with the full chords.
Human Race is a very driven album, hypnotic for the mind and body with an extra helping of melody not normally found in electro. Busy structures always give the listener something to take apart and a general detachment makes the album icy cool. "Ballooning" is the dreamy highlight, while "Wake Up!" and "Soul" offer pounding hooks that are inescapable. The lack of anything showy makes
Human Race as ignorable as you want, but there are plenty of layers to get lost in whenever you're feeling futuristic. ~ David Jeffries
