ALBUM

Former Living Colour vocalist Glover seemed destined to go down in history as the Jack Bruce of the Black Rock Coalition, best known for the powerful tenor that soared atop Vernon Reid's blazing riffs. On HYMNS, Glover turns out to be a late-blooming solo artist. While his formidable vocal chops are as sharp as ever, he gets to do a little more stylistic exploration on his own than he did with his former bandmates. While "Do You First, Then Do Myself" hails back to days of yore, it's the exception rather than the rule.

Though there are detours into Prince-like power balladry on "April Rain" and conceptual experiments like "Hymn #1017," the lasting impression of this album is of Glover as a reconstructionist R&B crooner. He trots out Willie Mitchell-indebted arrangements to accompany his Al Greenisms on "Little Girl," tips his hat to Isaac Hayes on "Hot Buttered Soul," and takes it to church on the acoustic based closer "Silence." HYMNS offers insight into the hitherto unexploited capabilities of this talented singer.
