Stacey Kent’s voice, full of subtle character, attains strength and beauty in a resonant orchestral setting, with skilled arrangements by Tommy Laurence and Kent’s husband, Jim Tomlinson. The strings, harp, acoustic guitar (from the excellent John Parricelli), and other colors enhance the broad-minded material: French songs by Serge Gainsbourg, Brazilian staples by Jobim and Edu Lobo, a sterling ballad reading of “That’s All,” and six engaging originals by Tomlinson and cowriters with a modern, even quasi-electric bent.
