Florida's JackBoy is closely affiliated with the Kodak Black-led Sniper Gang crew, standing out from the pack with a distinctively staggered flow and a tendency to swing into passionate singing mid-verse. Since his arrival in 2016 with the Stick Up Kid mixtape, JackBoy has sharpened his style from somewhat generic beginnings to more interesting delivery on frequently released projects. With the 17 songs on this self-titled mixtape, JackBoy steps beyond his previous work with consistently strong performances, upgraded instrumentals, and an overall infectiousness he was only reaching for before this. Album-opener "Pressure" begins with a short phone message from an incarcerated Kodak Black before a guitar-dotted trap beat underscores JackBoy's unique flow. This flow -- stuttered, breathless syllables interrupted by a word or two of gutsy singing -- shows up in different variations on multiple songs and most captivating components of the project. Many of the tracks stand out due to the chemistry between flexible vocal performances and uncommon production choices. The mellow, hypnotic beat of "Cleaning Crew," aggressive melodic qualities of the YFN Lucci-featuring "Critical Condition," and weird Auto-Tuned pop of "Zombie World" are just a few of many exceptional tracks on what amounts to JackBoy's strongest effort to date.
