The album starts with the title track, which features a melee of crazy fast unison guitar and piano lines and weird Beach Boys-type "ooohs." It sounds as if it might be the start of an amazing album, but it's mostly downhill from there. Brief moments of brilliance reappear on songs such as "Transistor Sister," with its swooping guitars, but it doesn't generate excitement in the listener. It just seems generic and rehashed from so many other punk bands. On many songs, it doesn't seem like the band knows what level to go to next. If more than one person wrote the music, it might make the album a little more textured. The record plays like a metal version of No Doubt with Superchunk's Mac McCaughan on vocals. Even when the band does break away from its staleness, such as displayed by the subtlety of "Deranged," it still seems forced. No matter how hard they try, the members of
Gaunt can't face the fact that they can really only write lightning-fast riffs that grow old after a couple of listens.
