A recording of recent vintage -- meaning there is no exact date but it surely dates from the new millennium, likely its second decade -- Live from the Island finds Commander Cody leading his latter-day band the Modern Day Airmen through a set of familiar favorites somewhere on Long Island. The songs remain the same ("Hot Rod Lincoln," "Lost in the Ozone Again," "Beat Me Daddy 8 to the Bar"), as does the sound -- a turbocharged, cool-grooving country-rock built from chicken-picking guitars and Western swing. It's what the good Commander's been churning out since the '60s and he can do it in his sleep...and while he and the Modern Day Airmen aren't dozing here, they're doing nothing that can't be heard on an average Wednesday night happy hour, either. There is an appeal to that -- it goes down smooth and easy to enjoy -- but there sure isn't much reason to listen to a by-the-numbers set alone at home, either.
