Dank des brillanten Debütalbums Home Again, das Michael Kiwanuka im Jahre 2012 herausbrachte, ist der Brite zu einem der großen Stars des heutigen Szene des Nu Soul aufgestiegen. Mit nur 25 Jahren wurde Kiwanuka mit nicht weniger großen Namen als Bill Withers, Otis Redding und Marvin Gaye verglichen. Auf seinem zweiten Album Love & Hate, das nun erscheint, zeigt uns der Londoner seine rockige Seite, ohne seine eindeutig souligen Einflüsse zu verleugnen. Es wurde produziert von Danger Mouse und enthält viele anspruchsvolle Kompositionen (wie zum Beispiel die zehnminütige Sinfonie Cold Little Heart, die das Album eröffnet) und unerwartete Referenzen wie Akkorde, die eindeutig an David Gilmour von Pink Floyd erinnern. Aber auch die Refrains zeigen Kiwanukas Brillanz und die Eingängigkeit der Melodien - sowohl wenn er beim gleichnamigen Song "I'm a white man in a white world" singt oder den Titelsong Love & Hate zum Besten gibt. Wenn er gezielt das Saitenspiel einsetzt oder wir uns über gospelähnliche Chorgesänge freuen können.
