More Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell, saxophonist
David Lahm continues to interpret several folk-rock classics from the
Joni Mitchell songbook by rearranging them with excellent jazz sensibilities. He goes beyond his 1999 release
Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell by presenting four originals -- "San Diego Holiday," "Walk This Way," "Wayne Swirled," and "Vibeca" -- and by concentrating his creativity within the sextet of
Randy Brecker,
Vincent Herring,
Roger Rosenberg, Ratzo Harris, and
Ron Vincent. Some main ideas from these sessions bring out the best in
Lahm's arrangements, particularly
Rosenberg's work on both soprano and baritone saxophones on "In France, They Kiss on Main Street."
Lahm's original compositions continue to be representative of mainstream jazz, with strong melodies and chord changes that he has creatively featured within his unique flow of ideas. This CD is sure to affect those with a penchant for
Joni Mitchell's music who seek to listen to it in a new way. ~ Paula Edelstein
