Tenor saxophonist
Chico Freeman's second recording as a leader (the first was an obscurity for Dharma in 1975) was originally cut for the Japanese Trio label before being made available domestically by India Navigation. An impressive effort, the adventurous music (five compositions by
Freeman) features the leader on tenor, soprano, flute and pan-pipe,
Henry Threadgill (switching between alto, baritone and flute), pianist
Muhal Richard Abrams, bassist
Cecil McBee (in the first of his many collaborations with
Freeman), flutist Douglas Ewart, and the percussion of
Steve McCall and Ben Montgomery. The performances are unpredictable yet logical inside/outside music. This set has not yet reappeared on CD. ~ Scott Yanow
