Like their American counterparts Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall or even (the late) Jay Reatard, the Australian band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard record discs like others buy coffee or drinks… The result is a psychedelic garage mix headed by Stuart McKenzie, who has already ten or so albums under his belt in barely seven years of his band’s existence! Divided in three chapters (let’s take a breath: The Tale Of The Altered Beast, The Lord Of Lightning Vs. Balrog and Han-Tyumi And The Murder Of The Universe), Murder Of The Universe is the perfect snapshot of their crazy rock’n’roll and uncontrollable eclectism, all wrapped-up in a concept album blending Apocalypse, Heroic Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Everything’s there, you name it! Garage rock of course, often psychedelic, and eventually hypnotic like krautrock, cataclysmic like metal and sometimes chatty like prog rock… Even if this kind of electric orgy takes on a whole new dimension on stage, we cannot deny that this release of the summer of 2017 may also be enjoyed at home, on your sofa, preferably under the light of a lava lamp… © MD/Qobuz
