This live performance from 1981 is one of the best recordings of
Jack Reilly's piano playing. He is showcased with his trio of the era (bassist Jack Six and drummer
Ronnie Bedford) on the standard "With a Song in My Heart" and five of his originals. "January" starts peacefully at a relaxed pace and, although
Reilly's piano playing gets freer and more passionate as the piece evolves, the tempo stays relaxed. "Minor Your Own Amos" has an eccentric feel but swings, "November" is a memorable minor-toned piece, "Lento for Carol" is the main ballad of the set, and "Kyrie" features the trio playing in 5/4 time. There is enough variety throughout the program to continually hold one's interest and the trio is consistently creative, making
November an excellent introduction to
Jack Reilly's music. ~ Scott Yanow
