Arizona’s Andrew Jackson Jihad have allowed the arid expanses of their home state to permeate their D.I.Y. Americana on the sparse, contemplative ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME. Whereas previous albums included banjo and more fleshed out arrangements, the songs here could have been recorded near a campfire at a gold strike. Acoustic ballads like the lonesome “Guilt: The Song” and “Candle in the Wind (Ben’s Song)” make use of the space between words and strums, treating the silence as one more instrument. And there are still boisterous rave-ups like “Growing Up” and “So Mad at You” that display the band’s punky, livewire energy.
