The glamorous and rather sexy photos that adorn their CD package make this classical string trio out to be something of a high culture
Dixie Chicks, decked out in everything from evening gowns to leather pants. As a result, it's a little hard to take them seriously once you get to the music. That's a shame, because the choice of material is quite nice, with an unusual sampling of
Astor Piazzola,
Raimundo Penaforte, Joaquin Turina, and
Heitor Villa-Lobos. While the performances are a bit stiff and mannered (surprising considering the titular theme), there is nothing formally wrong here. So they deserve kudos for their taste, but they seem to be trying to make up for a lack of soul with surface sass.
