Despite being a talented altoist,
Frank Strozier had not led a record date in 15 years when he headed this session (which was initially released domestically by Inner City). Teamed with flugelhornist
Danny Moore,
Howard Johnson on tuba, pianist
Harold Mabern, bassist
Lisle Atkinson and drummer
Michael Carvin,
Strozier (who plays flute on one piece) shows that he was still in prime form in the mid-'70s. He performs five of his originals, a piece by
Atkinson and
Cole Porter's "Get Out of Town." The music, which falls between hard bop and post-bop, holds one's interest throughout, making one regret that
Strozier has received few additional opportunities to lead his own dates.
