As the title indicates, Kites' Royal Paint With the Metallic Gardener from the United States Helped into an Open Field By Women and Children is one of those records that screams "Dig me, I'm all weird and stuff!" While this is undeniably true, it's even more true that weird does not necessarily equal interesting. These ten songs are either very short -- chanted vocal pieces like "Changlings" or abstract noise blurts like "Suppress Control Reduce Destroy," all but one well under two minutes -- or very long, like the seemingly endless "Call Out Your Real Name," which basically sounds like someone playing a video game turned up to 11 for about nine minutes. There are a few interesting passages -- "Milkweed Arrows" cycles through some intriguing drones for most of its nearly 11 minutes -- but overall, this album is plenty noisy, but with so little evident theory or interest that it's not at all engaging on even the simple level of curiosity. ~ Stewart Mason
