Germany's don of electronica-dub,
Burnt Friedman joins with legendary
Can drummer
Jaki Liebezeit, constructing a Carribean-fixated album that digitally deconstructs the pair's jam sessions with
Mouse on Mars cohort, guitarist Josef Suchy, and vibraphone professor Morten Gronvad. Smartly assembled in
Friedman's G4, the worldly calypso beats become a montage of rhythms and movements, too advanced for even the most practiced of musicians to reproduce. "Gulli Verreisen" steers through interstellar improvisation, while "Royal Roost" struts along like a Jamaican private dick. Despite the intricacies, this music never veers too far from listening enjoyment. Especially Gronvad's vibes keep the sound well within the pleasure threshold. Much like the post-rock experiments of early
Tortoise albums, but with substantially more virtuosity, this album could be analyzed to death, or merely become background music for your hipster coffee shop. ~ Joshua Glazer
