New music for percussion ensemble is a flourishing genre (nearly every academic music program has a percussion group), but one that often doesn't extend far past its own borders. That may change with this arresting release from the group Sandbox Percussion, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Chamber Music Performance in 2022. This album contains a group of works by composer Andy Akiho assembled under the Seven Pillars title. Seven of these are called "Pillars." One may wonder whether this refers to the seven pillars of wisdom in the biblical Book of Proverbs; the dense repetitions of these movements may also bring to mind pillars of light, but Akiho has declined any extramusical ideas. The works are pillars in the sense that they employ all four players of Sandbox Percussion and its battery of instruments, which include not only traditional items but also found materials such as tuned metal pipes and a cigar box. These pieces are interspersed with four others that feature the members of Sandbox Percussion individually; two of these are titled mARImbA and carTogRAPh. The result is a large structure that exploits the percussion ensemble to the hilt and holds the listener's interest through the album's entire 80-minute length. Those who tend to find percussion music monotonous are enthusiastically encouraged to sample here.
