Son of a Gun is Memphis rapper
Key Glock's sixth mixtape and second of 2020, arriving just shy of four months after
Yellow Tape. Coming so soon after the release before it,
Son of a Gun follows a similar stylistic blueprint as
Yellow Tape, but finds
Key Glock experimenting a little more with production choices and pushing his stark, trappy instrumentals and lyrical flexes ever so slightly. The album opens with its titular track, one of the best examples of this progress. Over a beat made up of jumpy trap hi-hats and classical violin samples,
Glock moves between aggressive, speedy flows and more staggered delivery, switching his style up multiple times within the short track. Like
Yellow Tape before it,
Son of a Gun features no other rappers than
Glock, leaving him alone responsible to inject versatility into the project. He succeeds at this with several excellent and variant tracks, moving from themes of a troubled childhood to bragging about his wealth to asserting his street lifestyle is authentic on standout cut "FYTB." There are a few tracks of generic flexing and some built on run-of-the-mill trap instrumentals, but by and large
Key Glock's one-man show remains strong on
Son of a Gun, riding on the momentum of his last mixtape and, in its best songs, letting that momentum take him new places. ~ Fred Thomas
