Originally released in 1995,
Soulsation! first surfaced as a four-disc CD box set of
the Jackson 5's hits, misses, and rarities from their fruitful beginnings at Motown between 1969 and 1975. Along with ubiquitous classic hits like "I Want You Back" and "ABC," the compilation offered a deeper look into the band's catalog with lesser-known tracks, later-period material, and plenty of solo cuts from various members. This issue of
Soulsation! focuses in on 18 tracks originally included as a fourth disc of unreleased tunes recorded mostly between 1969 and 1972. These unheard tracks include a grooved-out cover of
Sly & the Family Stone's "Everybody Is a Star" and renditions of Motown hits by other artists such as "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "I Hear a Symphony," as well as original outtakes that didn't make it onto official albums. ~ Fred Thomas
