Issued in the wake of the number one title track,
Sugar Shack is light, inoffensive, and, for the most part, insubstantial late-period Tex Mex rockabilly. There's not much original material, although
Fireballs guitarist
George Tomsco co-wrote "I Wonder Why." The influence of
Buddy Holly is pervasive (his "Lonesome Tears" and "Little Baby" are covered), and the program is filled out by covers of "Linda Lu," "Let the Good Times Roll," "Suzie Q," and
Roy Orbison's "Almost Eighteen." The Sundazed reissue uses the original single version of "Sugar Shack," and adds three bonus tracks from singles: the "Sugar Shack" soundalikes "Daisy Petal Pickin'" and "Ain't Gonna Tell Anybody," and "When My Tears Have Dried," co-written by
Frank Ifield.
