After breaking up in the late 1970's,
Soprano Summit did not regroup until 1990. This CD, the second of the group's later career, features the original version of
Soprano Summit (with clarinetist
Kenny Davern,
Bob Wilber on clarinet, soprano and alto, pianist
Dick Hyman, guitarist
Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist
Milt Hinton and drummer
Bobby Rosengarden) performing on the S/S Norway during the 1992 Floating Jazz Festival. The old magic was still very much present and the interplay between
Wilber and
Davern (who bring out the best in each other) is quite exciting. Tenor-saxophonist
Flip Phillips sits in and helps out on three of the ten selections. Highpoints include "Lady Be Good," "Chinatown" and a lengthy rendition of "Apex Blues" that builds and builds. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
