This 1955 trio date is actually a
Hank Jones record; for some reason, though,
Kenny Clarke -- the drummer for the session -- is listed as the leader. No matter, since either way it's billed, this disc offers a classic slice of early hard bop piano swing. Also featuring bassist
Wendell Marshall, the eight-track set features two choice
Jones originals ("We're All Together," "Odd Number"), a perennial
Charlie Parker cut ("Now's the Time"), and two evergreens by
Rodgers & Hart ("There's a Small Hotel," "My Funny Valentine").
Jones, of course, make every cut golden with his urbane phrasing and classy single-note runs. Essential listening for the jazz piano faithful.
