Since his 2018 solo debut, Anima Sacra, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has been increasingly visible in concert and on recordings. Here, Orliński offers a recording of Vivaldi's Stabat Mater, RV 621, a core part of his voice ranges repertoire that tells the biblical story of Mary's anguish at the cross, appropriately issued for the Easter season of 2022. This EP is accompanied by a short feature film written and directed by Sebastian Panczyk (on DVD for physical buyers and available digitally). The film portrays a modern interpretation of the Stabat Mater story alongside Orliński's recording and gives him a chance to show off his acting ability. The countertenor is backed on this recording by the period-instrument ensemble Capella Cracoviensis and its director and organist, Jan Tomasz Adamus, an early music specialist. Capella Cracoviensis does well in this supporting role, and Orliński gives a justly sympathetic performance. The attractive qualities of his voice are fully on display, especially in the long melismatic sections, such as in the "Quis est homo" movement. With the re-emergence of the countertenor in recent times, it is not difficult to see why the charismatic Orliński has found success and a growing audience early in his career.
