Max Brennan followed his
Alien to Whom? with more science-fiction futurism, accompanying each of his funk-flecked electronics with often heart-stopping narration culled from an astonishing collection of B-movies and '50s radio plays. At one point in the three-part "Close Encounters," the track grinds to a halt. "My God what I've learnt/The president has gone to war with you/There is no them she said, only us," states a disembodied voice, speaking so calmly the words could almost be a lullaby, the chilling moment before simple synthetics wrap themselves around the dialogue with the devastating beauty of a post-A-bomb mushroom cloud.
