The portrait of
Eddie Cantor on the cover of Jasmine's
Whoopee! is almost frightening in its garish intensity.
Cantor was a skilled comedic vocalist who more or less picked up where
Billy Murray left off. For sheer energy and irrepressibility, only
Al Jolson could shout him down. This interesting sampler of vintage performances seems to draw upon quite a number of film soundtracks that are crammed with supporting actresses, pit orchestras, applauding spectators, singing chorus girls, prancing buck dancers, and even the occasional hot jazz soloist. Lots of surprises and loads of fun, these are among the most entertaining
Eddie Cantor recordings ever issued on compact disc.
