ALBUM

Zelfverzekerde en volgroeide debuutplaten als die van The xx zijn zeldzaam. Maar er is dan ook niets doorsnee aan deze band. De inspiratiebronnen zijn heel divers – sporen van postpunk, droompop, dubstep, indiepop en R&B kunnen elk moment de kop opsteken – maar zijn samengebundeld in nummers die zowel simpel als uniek en mysterieus zijn. De beat klinkt meer als een hartslag dan een klap, de gitaren worden behendig beplukt en betokkeld en de zang komt zelden boven een droefgeestige zucht uit. "Crystalised" is waarschijnlijk een van de heftigste nummers, maar voelt nog steeds aan als een openhartig gesprek tussen twee geliefden. xx is een opmerkelijk debuut dat vele luisterbeurten verdient en de luisteraar laat smachten naar meer.
