Brooklyn-born musician/producer/composer David Sardy’s original score for director Ruben Fleischer’s horror/comedy flick Zombieland begins appropriately with a nod to
Jimi Hendrix’s iconic take on "The Star Spangled Banner." What follows is the kind of high-octane, schizoid soundtrack one would expect from the Grammy-winning producer of albums by
Wolfmother and
Marilyn Manson. Forgoing the usual dissonant, orchestral arrangements that have populated horror soundtracks since the genre came to prominence, Sardy peppers
Zombieland with a barrage of industrial beats, distorted guitars, and electronic mayhem, resulting in the audio equivalent of attention deficit disorder. It works wonders in the context of the film, but as a stand-alone listening experience, it may induce epilepsy. ~ James Christopher Monger
