In Hudson Mohawke’s third album of previously unreleased material to drop during the summer of 2020—all without warning, and all within a six-week span, at that—the Scottish producer continues to give free rein to his most audacious impulses. In some cases, HudMo seems to be taking inspiration from PC Music mastermind A. G. Cook’s 7G, using sketches and song fragments to offer glimpses of his creativity: The 76-second-long “Bunsen Honeydew” is little more than a pinging synth melody over a lone percussive sound, distilling the expansive spirit of Hudson Mohawke’s most ebullient anthems. At the other end of the spectrum, “Eternal Blonde,” taking cues from his labelmate Squarepusher, sounds like full-band jazz-funk. In between those two poles, HudMo offers inspired tweaks to his habitual tricks. “Hooker in a Cardboard Box” turns SOPHIE-like squeaks into an earth-shaking banger; “Bloody Marshmallow” performs an unhinged take on LA beat music, smoke rising from scorched sampler pads. And for TNGHT fans, “Costas” strips that duo’s sound down to nothing more than toms, snares, and squealing sawtooths. It’s trap-rave at its most potent—and mischievous.
