This EMI re-release features
Wolfgang Sawallisch leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in performances of Beethoven's three early symphonies and a live performance of the Eighth Symphony (which was composed much more in the tradition of the early symphonies than its contemporaries). Originally recorded in 1993 by the seasoned and venerable
Sawallisch, this two-disc set offers listeners a solid, reliable interpretation of these four Classically minded symphonies. The RCO's sound is powerful without becoming overbearing, with the possible exception of the sometimes rambunctious timpani. Strings are crisp and articulate; winds produce a pleasing, well-blended sound; and brass are appropriately punchy; however,
Sawallisch's interpretations of these symphonies are certainly not groundbreaking. Tempos are about what one would expect and listeners' notions of how Beethoven is to be performed are certainly not challenged. If anything,
Sawallisch leans toward slower tempos even in the vivacious outer movements of all four symphonies. But listeners in the market for a first recording of these symphonies will certainly be satisfied with this set. EMI's sound is a bit sterile, but clear enough to ensure each line of music is clearly audible.
