Although it does not say it anywhere on this 1994 CD, this music was recorded in 1962 (in Manchester, England) and four of the 11 selections were previously unreleased. The great cornetist
Wild Bill Davison is heard fitting right into trumpeter
Alex Welsh's hot septet (a group also featuring trombonist
Roy Crimmins and Johnny Barnes on clarinet and baritone). The ensemble runs through 11 Dixieland standards including "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me," "'S Wonderful," "Riverboat Shuffle" and "Royal Garden Blues" in colorful fashion.
Welsh modestly only sticks to playing ensembles although his presence does goad
Davison in spots; pity that the two brassmen do not trade off. A fine Dixieland date.
