Kontemporäre Jazz-Vokalistinnen, die sich über die ganze Strecke eines Longplayers der Songs von Billie Holiday annehmen: Was sich auf den ersten Blick ungefähr so spannend anhört wie eine lauwarme Tasse Kamillentee mit Stevia statt Zucker, ergibt 2015 bei Cassandra Wilson durchaus Sinn. 100 Jahre alt wäre "Lady Day" im April geworden, und gemeinsam mit dem Produzenten Nick Launay hat sich Wilson das zum Anlass genommen, mit "Coming Forth By Day" ein Tribute-Album an eine der größten Sängerinnen der letzten, sagen wir, hundert Jahre zu veröffentlichen. Den richtigen Riecher bewies Wilson in der Instrumentierung der Platte: neben T Bone Burnett haben Wilson und Launay Thomas Wydler und Martyn Casey, beide hauptberuflich bei Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds verpflichtet. Gemeinsam enstand so ein streckenweise durchaus spartanisches, dem Blues-Verständnis der neueren Bad Seeds-Ästhetik gar nicht unähnliches Klangbild geschaffen (gute Beispiele hierfür sind die ersten beiden Songs der Platte, "Don't Explain" und "Billie's Blues"). Diese Verwurzelung im Blues unterschied Wilsons Stimme auch stets von anderen kontemporären Jazz-Sängerinnen und gibt dem Unterfangen auch eine weitere Ebene: die Re-Lokalisierung des Gala-Jazz in den Sümpfen. Man hat gar nicht erst versucht, sich ausschließlich Raritäten oder selten Gehörtes aus dem Ouevre Holidays herauszupicken: vielmehr nehmen sich Wilson und ihre Musiker hundert- und tausendfach Interpretiertem an. Eine Reise durchs US-amerikanische Songbook aber, dem – und das ist durchaus ein Kunststück dieser Platte – neue Nuancen und Farben abgewonnen werden können. "Ich konnte es nicht erwarten, mich ans Innere dieses Materials zu machen und es herauszuputzen, es neu zu erfinden, ein paar wilde und verrückte Dinge damit zu machen", meinte Wilson selbst in einem Interview über die Platte. Die Neuerfindung des Songbooks, vor allem wenn es um Omnipräsentes wie eben Holiday geht, ist natürlich so eine Sache. Neu erfunden hat Wilson auf "Coming Forth By Day" auch nichts. Ihr und ihren Mitstreitern gelingt aber durchaus ein würdiges und abwechslungsreiches Tribut an Billie Holiday, deren Stücke Wilsons Stimme ein paar Meter weiter in den Blues holt.
