Branching out from small-group projects such as Serpentines, Anti-House, and Ubatuba, Brooklyn-based tenor/soprano saxophonist and composer Ingrid Laubrock takes on orchestral writing in this invigorating, texturally rich release. She involves 46 people in all, including two conductors (Eric Wubbels, Taylor Ho Bynum) and four key soloists (herself and three of today’s most highly regarded fellow improvisers). The two extended works teem with ideas, spilling over in finely detailed parts informed by modern classical composition, yet with open spaces to allow for spontaneous music-making. Bracingly dense and dissonant, yet at times contemplative, the journey culminates in “Vogelfrei,” with the massed voices of eight singers creating a magical effect.
