Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of hip hop-influenced club music,
Alliance Ethnik unveiled Fat Comeback in 1999. This record, delivered primarily in their native French, is a ragtag assortment of old school beats, familiar sample tracks, and rap lyrics centered on grooving and moving to the music.
Alliance Ethnik haven't invented anything new; on the contrary, their presentation is reminiscent of early
Wham! and Falco, but not nearly as much fun. While assistance is provided by the likes of
Biz Markie, Rahzel, and
De La Soul in a wasted attempt to give this recording a hint of hip hop credibility,
Alliance Ethnik can't run far from their true dance music roots. ~ Roxanne Blanford
